Manila, Philippines– It’s been two years since the first trailer for Darna came out. Last year, Angel Locsin released a statement that she will not be returning as Darna due to her back injury which had been treated in Singapore. Later that year, Star Cinema and Locsin both retracted the statement.
But it seems legit now that Angel Locsin will no longer fly and portray the role of the Filipina superhero. In the Mars Ravelo movie adaptation to be directed by Erik Matti, a new actress will be suiting up for the role.
According to managing director, Malou Santos, of Star Cinema, Angel Locsin will not be able to fulfill the role of Darna due to health reasons. In her interview with MJ Felipe on Monday, she said she is deeply saddened with Angel Locsin’s back injury. She told the management right away that she cannot play the part. She further responded: “But deep in our hearts only she can be Darna, we ave her the chance and she promised to do the therapy.”
However, it seems that the back injury recurred three weeks ago so the management had to finally decide to open the role to someone else. For the network, her health is much important than the movie. Fans of Angel Locsin need not worry as ABS-CBN CEO himself assured them that their idol will have other projects. ABS-CBN reiterated that Locsin is one of their biggest stars and they are looking after her welfare.
As for the status of the actress, Locsin is doing well with the treatment but the role will require a lot of physical effort. It would be expected she will be in harness all the time and risking her health can only worsen it. Erik Matti still thinks she’s perfect for the role.
According to Locsin’s representative, she already accepted the fact that she had to let the Darna movie go. She then called on her fans to support whoever the new Darna will be: “Kailangan ko lang isipin ang buhay ko muna, kasi hindi po ako pinayagan ng doktor ko. Pero I tried, ABS-CBN tried, pero may mga bagay na kailangang i-let go para sa mas makakabuti. Ako tanggap ko na. Sana maintindihan din ng mga tao na hindi ko na magagawa ang Darna,” Locsin said.
[I need to think about my life – my health, my doctor did not allow me. But, I tried and ABS-CBN tried, but there are things we need to let go for the benefit of everyone. I accepted it already. I hope my supporters will understand I won’t be able to play Darna anymore.”]
She also asked her fans to understand her situation and she acknowledged how much her fans fought for it. She then continued: “… Kailangan na siguro natin harapin ang katotohanan at mag-move on…” [we need to face the reality and move forward.]
She ended her statement with appreciation and thanked her fans for all the support. She also rallied support for the new Darna! Several actresses has played the role of Darna both on TV and in films since its release in a comic book in 1950. Locsin played the role on GMA 7 in 2005 while the latest incarnation of the superhero is Marian Rivera, which she played under the same network in 2009.
